Board Presentation
Communication Skills
Preparation
What is the ONE thing that makes you nervous about board presentation?
Testing … Testing...‘Can you hear me’?
Most of us are familiar with this scenario.
The speaker is about to speak, and the mic is being tested.
It’s a way of making sure that the mic is working and the audience can hear the speaker clearly.
An important question to the audience has been asked – ‘Can you hear me?’
Bring this scenario as a leader delivering a board presentation, wouldn’t it be great to be able to say something like this to your audience before you start the presentation:
Testing… Testing, can you hear me?
Only this time, not just to test the mic, but to make sure your message is being heard, because there are some important questions lurking in the atmosphere between the mic and your audience.
🤔 What is your message?
🤔 What are you going to say?
🤔 Did you prepare?
Ask yourself these 3 questions before you jump into the board presentation, you will be more effective.
You are not just presenting you are also delivering a message.
If you don’t know what your message is, what you are going to say and you did not prepare yourself for communicating your message – then obviously the communication will not be received, and valuable time will be wasted!
At the next board presentation, remember these 2 essential elements:
➡️ Preparation and
➡️ Communicate what you have prepared.
However, the pain point for most leaders is that communication is not their strongest point.
The preparation was great – as one senior leader said to me in a workshop, ‘I asked AI got the important points, jotted them down but now the difficulty is how to communicate?'
Most of the time the ability to get the message across – is the challenge!
Sadly, most of us we are not formally trained how to communicate and we struggle as we go along, that's okay if you want to carry on struggling!
If you are not learning, not picking up the critical points how to communicate the core message, then you are missing out on an important aspect of your leadership skills - the opportunity to influence people.
It's through your communication skills as a leader you can influence, negotiate, build trust, manage conflict ... need I say more?
Learning is critical.
Learn how your verbal words what you say, and the non-verbal gestures can impact your communication.
Gestures can be any of the following:
➡️ Facial expression
➡️ Body movement
➡️ Body posture
➡️ Hand movement
➡️ Eye contact

Communication skills are critical for leaders.
Most leaders say it is one of their pain points.
Is this your pain point too?
